POWER moves

Physical activities and fitness are bodily movements that use the skeletal muscles. These muscles apply force to the bones and joints by contraction. There are four types of physical fitness,

  • Endurance, or aerobic, activities uses large muscle groups and causes your body to use more oxygen then it uses when resting. The goal of aerobic exercise is to increase cardiovascular endurance. They keep your heart, lungs, and circulatory system healthy and improve your overall fitness. Examples include walking, jogging, swimming, biking, jump rope, tennis, and running.

  • Strength and resistance training, firms, strengthen, and increase muscle mass, as well as improve bone density, balance, and coordination.  Examples of strength exercises are push-ups, pull-ups, lunges, squats, bench press. Anaerobic exercise also includes lifting weights, functional training, the use of resistance bands  interval training, and high-intensity interval training which increase short-term muscle strength.

  • Balance exercises can make it easier to walk on uneven surfaces and help prevent falls. To improve your balance, try tai chi or exercises like standing on one leg.

  • Flexibility exercise lengthen your muscles and can help your body stay limber.  Activities such as stretching help to improve joint flexibility and keep muscles limber. Yoga and doing various stretches can improve your joint flexibility. The goal is to improve the range of motion which can reduce the chance of injury.

The benefits of being generally fit includes improved overall health; the reduction of risk factors in chronic disease; and the achievement, management, and sustainability of your ideal body weight.

There are many different types of exercise so it is important that you pick what is right for you. Most people benefit from a combination. Fitting regular exercise into your daily schedule may be difficult at the beginning. Start slowly, and don’t try to do too much but push yourself a bit. Doing fifteen minutes at a time is fine. You can work your way up to doing the recommended amount of exercise for your age. You may also find it helpful to invite a friend or exercise with a group.
